Wildflower Care

Wildflowers are slowly but surely gaining popularity as a good landscape alternative with its rich color and natural beauty.  The appeal of wildflower gardens is due to them being relatively low-maintenance compared to the typical European-style formal gardens consisting of straight lines, square corners and measured edges.  A wildflower garden requires little water and mowing frequency is greatly reduced once established.

A common misconception held by most people is that wildflowers are easily grown from seeds.  Although some species require the barest effort of casting the seed on the soil and waiting for its growth, most wildflowers need specific soil and temperature condition and a certain degree of ongoing care and attention.  Wildflower species that require the most time and attention are all worth the effort.

Wildflower seeds that are commercially available are usually not genetically altered unlike ornamental flower or vegetable seeds.  Genetic alteration is done to achieve specific traits such as rapid germination, height, color or adaptation to specific soil types or climates.  Nature will always play an important role in the success or failure of wildflower planting.  Adverse weather conditions and poor soil condition or drainage problems may seriously affect the outcome.
