Flower Centerpieces
The art of arranging flowers can be traced back to the time the Chinese put water in a container of cut flowers while the rest of the world was braiding garlands, making wreaths and flinging petals. However, it was the Japanese who created philosophies and design principles of flower arranging, when they were able to grasp the vision of combining cut flowers, water and containers from China. It was only through a Japanese emissary to China that the knowledge of sustaining life in cut floral material by adding water was brought back. The first formal school of flower arranging was established by a priest. It did not take long for the use of flower arrangements to spread very quickly from the priesthood and temples to the nobility and their homes. Flowers have been seen in history in tombs, pyramids and sphinxes of Egypt. Ancient Greece preferred floral wreaths and garlands to be placed on the brows of living heroes, statues of gods, goddesses and famous mortals and as a way of honoring the dead. The Eastern Roman Empire had images of beautiful urns and chalices filled with symmetrical foliage trees. The Gothic period saw the free use of flowers, foliage and fruits to decorate cathedrals in Europe. Niches were designed to hold vases and urns for cut flowers in France. Floral arrangements found their way at the center of the dinning table while smaller arrangements were used to decorate the elegant rooms of homes. At about this time, the buffet table came into its greatest elegance. The decorator has the perfect stage for garlands, wreaths and pyramids of flowers, sweets and fruits.
